The community of Whale Cove is named for the many beluga whales that live on the coast near the town. The cove is located between Arviat and Rankin Inlet. The community was initially settled by three separate Inuit groups, who inhabited the area before the settlement developped of the 1950s. Today, Whale Cove remains a traditional Inuit community, consisting of multiple diverging dialects and cultures.
The abundance of land and marine wildlife in the area enables the Inuit of Whale Cove to continue to have a traditional diet and lifestyle. Seal, walrus and beluga are the main part of the traditional diet. Trout and arctic char fishing, along with Caribou and polar bear hunting, are among the regular seasonal activities. |
