Rankin Inlet, or Kangiqtiniq, meaning “deep bay or inlet” in Inuktitut, is the business and transportation center of the Kivalliq region. Rankin is the gateway to Nunavut from cantral and western Canadian provinces. The high density of traffic in the area, a history of regional government, in addition to mining and exploration, has caused Rankin Inlet to develop a strong taskforce of entrepreneurs. Many services are offered by outfitters and freight expeditors to companies interested in doing business in the area.

Rankin Inlet is also known by many for its chilling winds, extreme winter climate and water resources. Several small, picturesque islands dot the inlet in proximity of the community. The Ijiraliq (Meliadine) River Territorial Historic Park is great for hiking, fishing and bird watching. The area also hosts some very interesting archaeological sites, such as the European whaler shipwreck near Marble Island and the Thule sites in the Ijiraliq River area, which all provide a glimpse of the rich history.
