English and Inuktitut

The Inuktitut word "Arviat" derives from the name given to bowhead whales. The traditional Inuit community is located on the western shore of Hudson Bay, and is also the southernmost community in Nunavut. It has the third largest population in all Nunavut communities, and is a very fast-growing community.

The area is rich in wildlife: the McConnell River Migratory Bird Sanctuary, just south of town, exposes thousands of nesting waterfowl. During the year, beluga whales are frequently seen, as well as caribou, migratory birds, and polar bears.

Arviat is also well-known for its artistic talent. Many local musical groups have released CD's commercially. Also, there is an arts and craft centre that houses and exports Inuit art. The Hudson Bay Quest sled-dog race was run for the first time in 2004, from Churchill to Arviat.
