Baker Lake means "where the river widens" in Qamani’tuaq. Its name, adopted in 1761, comes from the fact that the community is located at the mouth of the Thelon River, on the shore of Baker Lake. The Hamlet is 320 kilometres inland from the western coast of the Hudson Bay. The Hudson's Bay Company established a trading post in 1916. Following in 1927 were Anglican missionaries. The first hospital and shool were built in 1957 and 1958, respectively.
Today, the Baker Lake community is home to 11 Inuit groups and to many internationally exhibited artists such as Simon Tookoome and Jessie Oonark. |
